WILLOW CREEK NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
APRIL is here, it’s been a while since we’ve communicated, hope everyone’s new year is going good thus far. This month is full of fun holidays such as Aprils Fools Day, Earth Day, and Administrative Professionals Day, not to be outdone by National One Cent Day!
Easter was early this year falling in March and we hope everyone had lots of fun hiding and finding eggs, hope there was some money is some of them, my grandkids love that.
April is a good time to sow new lawns and repair bare patches in the yard. Around April 20th, you can plant your tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, peppers, cauliflower. Just be ready to cover if we get a late frost. In Kentucky, they say Derby Day is the best time to plant after threat of frost. If you are planting by seed, now is the time to plant the veggie and flower seeds. Easy flower seeds to plant are sunflower, alyssum, nasturtiums, cosmos and marigolds. Remember squash and zucchini really like well‐composted soil. If you don’t have a large area to plant a garden, you could try planting a garden in pots and hanging baskets. This type of gardening works great with tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, green onions, beans, squash and radishes. You can plant 2 or 3 herbs in the pots to fill in space or plant marigolds to help keep bugs away from your vegetables plus, you won’t have as many weeds to pull. Be sure your plants get a lot of sun for growth. For large tomatoes, be sure to use tomato cages or poles. If you line the pots with plastic, be sure to poke a hole in the plastic where the drilled hole is in the pot to get rid of excess water. This will keep the container from rotting or producing fungus. You can cut up sponges to put at the bottom of the pots. They will hold moisture and release back into the soil. They are now saying that putting gravel at the bottom of pots is not very good for the plants. So, you might want to rethink that one.
HOUSEKEEPING:
You may have noticed the blue marks on the sidewalks on the Oldham County side. Those are from a company accessing the sidewalks for tripping hazards so hopefully we will see some of those being fixed in the near future, especially the ones that are in bad shape. The big tree was cut down in the 11400 block of Deham Dr. that caused the sidewalk there to raise up out of the ground and teeter totter back and forth so that is a good sign that work on the sidewalks may not be far off.
With mowing season in full swing, we need the help of our wonderful neighbors again this year to help with mowing the common areas and the front entrance. Please let us know if you can help out at willowcreekna1@gmail.com your help in keeping our neighborhood tidy is very much appreciated.
If we haven’t already collected your email address, please help us by providing your email at willowcreekna1@gmail.com. This will ensure you receive a newsletter as at this time we can no longer print or deliver. You can also access the newsletter on our website willowcreek.community
Remember that $50 a year is needed from all residents to keep the streetlights on, that’s .14¢ a day for the safety of our children and our neighborhood. Please send your $50 payment to: WCNA – PO Box 258, Crestwood, KY. 40014 or visit the website: willowcreek.community and pay with your debit or credit card via our secured site.
As of the writing of this newsletter 3.27.24 only 113 properties have paid their contribution, this time last year we had 134 properties paid and we barely were able to pay LG&E for the entire year. The last thing we want to happen is for the streetlights to be turned off but that is going to happen if more people don’t step up and contribute to their neighborhood. There are 341 properties in this neighborhood, if 300 would pay $50.00 we would collect $15,000 a year which is more than enough to pay LG&E and have funds left over for mowing or potentially snow removal in Jefferson Co. In 2023 only 172 paid for the entire year. We can do better Willow Creek.
